10 Human Foods Dogs Can Eat

Alice Lopez

Dogs are loyal companions, so it’s only natural that we want to treat them like part of the family and share some of our favorite human foods with them. Although many human foods are unsafe for dogs, a surprising number are A-OK for dogs to eat and even beneficial for your pup.

We spoke with vet experts about 10 human foods dogs can eat—and the nutritional benefits they offer. Plus, we share how to safely feed human foods to your pet.

Before introducing any new food into your dog’s diet, always check with your veterinarian.

Pumpkin
Pumpkin is a dog-safe, antioxidant-rich food containing many health-promoting nutrients that can help with everything from a shinier coat to better eyesight to improved digestion.
It’s a common ingredient in dog treats and dog food, and small servings of plain cooked pumpkin can make a great healthy snack.

Sweet Potato
Due to their stellar nutritional profile, sweet potatoes are a starchy, sweet root vegetable that’s high in beta-carotene, an antioxidant supporting your dog’s immune system, vision, and skin.
Sweet potatoes are also an excellent source of digestion-boosting fiber. Only serve your dog plain, well-cooked sweet potato.

Apples
Crunchy, sweet, and brimming with nutrients, apples are a dog-friendly fruit that many pups enjoy.
They’re low-calorie and rich in prebiotic fiber, which can help support a dog’s gastrointestinal health.
Apples may also freshen your pup’s breath by helping to keep their teeth free of odor-causing plaque and tartar (although apple munching certainly can’t replace daily brushing!).
Do not feed your dog the core or the seeds, though. The core is a choking hazard, and the seeds are toxic.

Bananas
Bananas are one of several dog-safe fruits your pup can enjoy.
They’re rich in magnesium, potassium, and fiber, all of which are essential to your dog’s health.
Potassium, for example, is important for your dog’s heart, kidneys, muscles, and digestion.
Don’t give your pup an entire banana; start with a small slice and give no more than half a banana to a large dog per day.

Broccoli
In small quantities, broccoli is not only safe for dogs, but it’s also a nutrient-rich superfood with many health benefits.
This cruciferous veggie boasts several minerals, including potassium, magnesium, and sodium, all of which are vital for your dog’s hormone health and metabolism.
It’s also packed with vitamins K and C, which helps keep your dog’s bones strong and boosts their immune system.

Carrots
Crunchy and naturally sweet, carrots are a dog-safe vegetable full of beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A and supports your pup’s vision and immune system.
They’re low in calories and high in fiber, making them a great treat for dogs on a diet. Serve them raw in small pieces or lightly steamed.

Cucumber
Composed of 95% water, cucumbers are hydrating and provide essential vitamins like C, B, and K, as well as minerals like magnesium and potassium.
They’re low in calories, making them ideal for weight-conscious dogs. Slice thinly and remove seeds if your pup has a sensitive tummy.

Strawberries
Fresh or frozen strawberries are packed with fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants.
They support your dog’s immune system, aid digestion, and contribute to healthy skin and coat. Serve in small, bite-sized pieces.

Yogurt
Plain, unsweetened, non-fat or low-fat yogurt is a healthy source of protein and calcium.
It also contains probiotics that may help support a healthy gut microbiome. Avoid flavored yogurts with added sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Blueberries
Blueberries are low in calories but high in fiber, vitamins C and K, and antioxidants.
They help support your dog’s immune system, brain health, and digestion. Serve fresh or frozen in small amounts as a tasty treat.
