November is National Senior Pet Month, a time to remind us to care for our senior fur babies, especially those who have been with us for years!
As dogs aged, their needs changes and we need to adjust the way we take care of them.
Let's take a look at a few practical tips for caring for your dog in his or her later years.
𝟭. 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝘆
Taking your dog for regular health checkups can help detect potential problems early, so you can take better care of your dog's health.
𝟮. 𝗗𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝗔𝗱𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗪𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁
Older dogs have a slower metabolism and are less active, making them easy to gain weight. 🐾 Overweight might increase the burden on joints and heart, so weight control is especially important for senior dogs.
𝟯. 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵
Older dogs often have joint problems. In order to reduce pain and improve their mobility, you can consider adding supplements containing glucosamine or chondroitin to their daily diet.
𝟰. 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲
Easy walks or short periods of indoor play can help maintain your dog's muscle strength and cardiorespiratory fitness.  At the same time, exercise can also stimulate their mental state and reduce anxiety or depression caused by old age.
𝟱. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁
As the mobility of older dogs decreases, you can minimize the risk of injury by putting non-slip mats on the areas where your dog spends a lot of time. 🏠 In addition, make sure their sleeping areas are warm and comfortable, especially for dogs with poor joints, and provide soft mattresses to greatly improve their quality of life. 🐾💤
