🔸 Dogs may eat grass for the following reasons:
1️⃣ Gastrointestinal discomfort
Dogs eat grass to relieve symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort such as flatulence and indigestion. Eating grass adds fiber to dogs diet to induce vomiting if they feel unwell or aid in excretion, helping to improve overall stomach and intestinal health. Observe your dog’s subsequent defecation and health conditions for any abnormality and seek medical attention immediately if any.
2️⃣ Boredom
When there is nothing interesting happening, your dog may feel bored and end up eating grass to pass time. To try to reduce the grass-grazing, observe if your dog gets enough exercise or try spending more time with your dog.
3️⃣ Lack of certain nutrients
If your dog chooses certain types of grass or plants to eat, it is likely that the vegetation provides nutrients that your dog lacks. It is recommended to add some vegetables to your dog’s meal to increase its fiber intake. Or consult your veterinarian on whether to adjust the contents of your dog’s diet.
4️⃣ Grass tastes good
Dogs have a foraging nature and may have encountered plants that they find yummy. Nevertheless, continue to pay attention to your dog’s diet and physical health for any signs of abnormality.
🔸 Extra attention should be paid to the following:
◾️ There are often parasites and eggs in bushes, especially in the summer season when parasites are the most active. It is recommended not to let dogs eat grass to avoid parasitic infections.
◾️ Note if the grass is sprayed with pesticides or if there are animal carcasses to avoid your dog from getting poisoned.
◾️ Vaccines, insecticide drops, and other protective measures should be regularly administered.
